About

TANI HOUSE is a Japanese Family Style Guest House, which started in 1970, the year of the World Expo in Osaka.  In response to the request of Kyoto City, Mrs. Seiko Tani assisted foreign visitors who came to Kyoto and allowed them to stay at her house.  Tani House is located at the northern part of the city in a scenic area near Daitokuji Temple, well-known for its several natural treasures.  The area around Tani House is very typical Japanese.

Although Tani House isn’t a Ryokan or ‘Japanese Inn’ and meals are not served, there is a kitchen available.  In addition, coffee, tea, milk, cookies and crackers are free to have as you like.  You can relax and sleep on Japanese futons (Japanese style beds) on tatami (straw mat floors) to really experience Japanese lifestyle.

Tani House is where you can talk with people from all over the world, and exchange information about different cultures, language, art, and religion in the world.  The Tani Family also tries to help you learn Japanese customs & way of thinking.  Tea Ceremony (sado) and Flower Arrangement (ikebana) are offered at your request.  Mrs. Tani has been actively contributing to developing friendships with visitors from around the world.  She was presented with awards by both the mayor of Kyoto and the head of the northern ward in Kyoto in 1989.  Tani House has also received a lot of recognition and appreciation from foreign organizations and embassies around the world.

The Tani Family tries to better its accommodations and atmosphere all the time, and is waiting for you to visit Kyoto.  Please don’t hesitate to come stay with us and experience Kyoto life and hospitality.
