Day 2:  PHNOM PENH – GOLFING AT ROYAL CAMBODIA GC (B,L,D)

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.

Morning round of 18-hole golf at Royal Cambodia Golf & Country Club, inclusive of green fee and caddy.

(Royal Cambodia Golf & Country Club is located 33 kilometers west of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on a property of 120 acres. It is a multifunctional resort with swimming pools, tennis courts, convention facilities, villas and, of course, a golf course which conforms to international standard with 18 holes spread out on 50 acres of land. The course is designed focusing on bunkers for the out course and on ponds for the in course. The course has a nickname, Sugar Palm Course, due to the many sugar-palm trees planted around the course. The golf course is very Cambodian in style. The out course looks like a plain with wide fairways, like a rich Cambodian farmland; whereas the in course challenges you with different terrain, long fairways, numerous ponds small and large. The clubhouse, in French country-style, has facilities such as ballroom, pro-shop, locker rooms, café and restaurant. The course is also capable of holding regional and international championship competitions. The designers were Taiwanese and Japanese experts. It opened in 1996. Total yardage is 7,077 and par 72.)

Lunch of Khmer food at Goldfish River Restaurant.

Non-golfers make an excursion to Phnom Udong which served as the capital city during the reigns of several kings between 1618 and 1866 about 40km north of Phnom Penh, and Kompong Chhnang to see a typical Cambodian town that few tourists visit. Several kings including King Norodom were crowned in Phnom Udong. The two humps of the mountain have several stupas on them and the view of the sugar-palm dotted countryside from the top is very picturesque. There are temple ruins scattered around. King Monivong (r.1927-41) burial memorial is often visited for its architectural design and motif-covered stupa. A stairway leads down the hillside to a pavilion with graphic murals depicting Khmer Rouge atrocities. A memorial to the victims of Pol Pot was erected here, one of the many places in Cambodia under the mad Pol Pot regime that murdered thousands of Khmers after torturing them. Instruments of torture were found among the bones of those who died a painful death.

Lunch of Khmer food at Goldfish River Restaurant in Phnom Penh with the golfers.

Return to the hotel and be at leisure.

Dinner at Le Louisiane of set French menu.

Overnight at Hotel Cambodiana/Sunway Hotel, Phnom Penh.

Day 3:  PHNOM PENH – GOLFING AT PHNOM PENH GC (B,L,D)

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Morning game of 18-hole golf at the Royal Cambodia Phnom Penh Golf Club, inclusive of green fee and caddy.

(Royal Cambodia Phnom Penh Golf Club, located only 8 kilometers from the Phnom Penh international airport, facing the peripheral roads, on the property of 200 hectares, is the only high quality golf course with some good facilities in Phnom Penh. Since its grand opening on 27 March 1999, this club has served numerous golfers and non-golfers from around the world. Right from the beginning of constructing this course the emphasis is on environmental protection. The original landforms were preserved with its planted trees of sugar-palms. A lot of attention was given to the improvement of the surroundings by planting flowers and more trees and increasing the number of ponds. After four years of planning and construction, the course with its international standard of 18 holes was opened to golfers. Every hole has its specialty, requiring concentration in the stroke to hit the ball with accuracy. Every fairway has 4 teeing grounds of varying distances; nearly one hundred bunkers; 12 water hazards; and different widths of the roughs to differentiate the difficulty. The large and tilting high-speed green will delight the high-handicap players and challenge the low-handicap players. There is a golf driving range to the left of the clubhouse to provide players a means to develop golf technique. The fine-looking clubhouse is designed to show traditional Khmer architectural features combined with modern concepts.)

Lunch at the clubhouse or at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of western set lunch.

Non-golfers take a cruise in a sophisticated boat, “Le Deauville II”, with luncheon on board.

Or, go shopping in Psar Thmei, Psar Tuol Tom Pong and Psar O Russei as well as the shops which assist handicapped Cambodians – NCDP Handicrafts, Wat Than Handicrafts, Khemara Handicrafts, Made in Cambodia, Rajana, Songkhem Collection and Nyemo. Western set lunch at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club overlooking the Mekong River.

Free at leisure until 7pm when we all go for dinner at Chung Hsing Restaurant.

Overnight at Hotel Cambodiana / Sunway Hotel, Phnom Penh.

Day 4:  SIEM REAP – TOUR OF ANGKOR TEMPLES (B,L,D)

Buffet breakfast at the hotel. Morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Siem Reap.

At Siem Reap airport, meet and transfer to hotel for check-in before a tour of the Angkor temple complex. We enter the Angkor temple complex by the south gate of Angkor Thom along a bridge-way lined by 54 gods on one side and 54 demons on the other.

In the centre is the massive Bayon temple built by King Jayavarman VII (r.1181-1218).

It is noted for the 216 enormous faces carved on its 54 towers depicting King Jayavarman VII as the Buddha Avalokiteswara who delayed his own entry into Nirvana in order to help others. Several important temples were built within the city walls of Angkor Thom – among them the royal enclosure and Phimeanakas built by Jayavarman V, Baphuon still under restoration, Terrace of the Leper King and the Elephant Terrace from where the kings of Angkor watch parades, pageants and acrobatic shows. Visit the King’s temple of Ta Prohm which he built for his mother. It is still clasped in the embrace of the jungle – and purposely left so to give visitors the feeling of awe that the early explorers felt when suddenly they came upon this hidden ruin. We visit two other of the King’s handiwork of Preah Khan (as a centre for worship and learning) and Neak Pean (a hospice for the ancient Khmers), if there is time for them before lunch.

Lunch at Nest’s & Fin’s restaurant.

In the afternoon visit the majestic temple of Angkor Wat built by a succession of kings beginning with Suryavarman II (r.1112-52) in honour of the Hindu god, Vishnu – a temple of which there is no parallel.

At about 5.30pm climb up Bakheng Hill and among the fallen stones and open archways of the ruin watch the sun sets over Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap for a mystical experience. Dinner with show at the hotel or at Kulen II restaurant.

Overnight at Angkor Palace Resort (5-star) or similar, Siem Reap.

Day 5:  SIEM REAP – DEPARTURE (B)
